"Vtrivsque Hemispherii Delineatio"

Published by Wytfliet, 1597

Cornelius Wytfliet published this rare map in 1597 in his Descriptiones Ptolemicae Augmentum, regarded as the first atlas relating exclusively to the New World.

Inspired by Mercator, this reproduction of his mapping shows the world as it was thought to exist at the end of the 16th century. In charting America, Wytfliet has depicted Quivira, the rich lands discovered by Coronado in 1541, and Anian or the "Kingdom of Anion", believed to be the location of a strait between Asia and northwest America.
