This superior reproduction of the original antique steel plate engraving of Mexico, California and Texas by the noted English mapmaker, John Tallis, is a fine example of mid-19th century pictorial mapmaking.
The map shows the Mexican states, the cities and towns, rivers, lakes and mountainous regions as they existed in the mid-nineteenth century. Also shown are California and Texas, both part of Mexico until ceded to the United States in 1848 and 1836, respectively. Of particular interest are the newly discovered gold districts of California and the exquisite vignettes of the Ruins at Uxmal and Mexican Peasantry.
