Sheldon Dibble published this beautiful reproduction of an early mapping of the Hawaiian Islands in his book, History of the Sandwich Islands, in 1843. Dibble taught
history at the missionary seminary at Lahainaluna and used its press to issue the book.
This rare map was engraved and printed by Dibble's students from copper sheeting and is a testament to the focus, drive, and ingenuity of those early high school students.
In addition to this book, Dibble also assisted in the translation of the Bible, as well as a dozen other translations of scholarly and scriptural works for the benefit
of the Hawaiian people.
