This superb reproduction of the original copperplate engraving was first published in Atlas du Voyage de La Perouse en Paris, 1797. The French Admiral, Jean Francis La Perouse, was the first official European to visit the island of Maui, where a bay is named in his honor.

Note the charted lines of La Perouse's passage through the Sandwich Islands. He was sent on this voyage by French King Louis XVI to promote foreign trade and to advance scientific understanding.
