Steve Strickland is a long-term Maui resident and a distinguished
scrimshaw artist. He recently decided to turn his artistic talents to copperplate engravings of maps for the purpose of making intaglio
prints, which is one of the oldest printing methods and the favorite of early cartographers.
In this wonderfully rendered creation, Strickland brings together
important elements of Hawaiian culture in an effort to depict the significance and beauty of these islands. As Mark Twain said
of Hawaii, "The loveliest fleet of islands anchored in any ocean."
