This excellent reproduction of the original copperplate engraving was first published in 1779 in Voyage de Vancouver, and this French version is regarded by many as artistically superior to the English edition published a year earlier.

George Vancouver first visited the Sandwich Islands as a young officer under Captain James Cook, and this chart is from Vancouver's visits in 1792-94. Of special interest are the insets of Gallapagos Islands and Cocos Islands.
