"Dakota" Published by Colton & Co., 1868 This superior reproduction of the classic map of "Dakota", identifiable by its strapwork border, was originally published by G.W. and C.B. Colton & Co. of New York in 1868. Colton, who published his first atlas in 1855, was an immediate commercial success, and his maps, although once easy to obtain, have become increasingly scarce and inevitably more expensive. The state of Dakota, which is now divided into North and South, as well as the adjacent states of Montana to the north and Nebraska to the south, are clearly delineated on this fine image.
