This superb reproduction of the original copperplate engraving was first published by G.G. Robinson of London in 1798. The Comte de la Perouse, explorer, navigator and hydrographer, was sent by Louis XVI on an expedition to rival that of the English Capt. James Cook.

This reproduction of the original early chart of the harbor of Monterey Bay shows the compass heading, anchorage and Monterey, the Spanish capital of California, founded in 1774--before the American revolution.
