This dramatic and highly informative map was originally published in Atlas Novus by cartographer Mattheus Seutter of Vienna in 1736. The Seutter family was one of the most important and prolific German map publishers of the 18th century.
It is interesting to note that the French had superseded the Spanish in their claim to Florida but would eventually vacate that claim to the United States. Also depicted in this classic reproduction is the beginning of what would become the Louisiana Territory, a huge tract of land purchased by the United States from France.
