In an early military conquest, General Benjamin Franklin Butler marched his troops to Annapolis, Maryland, in order to secure the route to Washington, D.C., thus providing for the Capitol's protection.

Butler adopted this strategy on his own initiative and it proved to be an immensely important achievement.
