Salmon P. Chase
Settling in Ohio, Salmon P. Chase served first as governor, and then as senator, before
being invited to serve as Secretary of the Treasury in Lincoln's first cabinet. In that
capacity, he presided over the complex and difficult task of financing the war.
He was a rabid anti-slavery proponent and his strongly held views were often at odds
with Lincoln's more moderate views. Despite these differences, Lincoln later appointed
him to the Supreme Court.
