Senator J.J. Crittenden of Kentucky proposed a series of legislative propositions in hopes of reaching a compromise between the North and the South. But, in the end, it was all for naught.

"We have done nothing," he said. "We are like the man who stands by watching his house in flames, hoping it will stop before the fire burns it to the ground".
