S.A. Douglas

Noted lawyer, orator and Senator from Illinois, Douglas is most remembered for his support of Popular Sovereignty as a solution to the slavery problem between the states, and also for his famous series of debates with Abraham Lincoln.

Known as "The Little Giant" for his short stature, large head and broad shoulders, Douglas died in Chicago on June 3, 1861, after contracting typhoid fever.
