Battle of Rich Mountain
In one of the earliest engagements of the Civil War, Union regiments under the command
of General George B. McClellan attacked and defeated Confederate troops defending a
strategic mountain pass on the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike.
The Union victory gave the Federal forces control over much of northwestern Virginia,
and allowed those counties to form the government that eventually led to the creation of
the new state of West Virginia.
