Formerly the old royal capital of Hawaii and a booming 19th century whaling port, Lahaina has since been designated as a national historic landmark, and is the premier and most energized town on the incredible island of Maui. Lahaina Harbor retains the hustle and bustle of earlier times as thousands each day head out for sightseeing, fishing, snorkeling or, in season, whalewatching trips.
This magnificent view shows the lighthouse, the Pioneer Inn, the recently-scuttled Carthaginian, the old Court House, and a few of the buildings along Front Street. Towering over that scene, and the ubiquitous sugar cane fields in between, are the majestic West Maui Mountains. This is one of the most photographed and painted scenes on the Valley Isle, and it's easy to see why!
