Maui artist Richard Fields moved to Hawaii in 1971 from Whittier, California. A master of realism, Mr. Fields combines acrylic paint, colored pencil, and airbrush to achieve a highly detailed image filled with light, shadow, texture, and dramatic atmospheric effect.
He favors multi-panel panoramic landscapes including beaches, seascapes, forests, and
mountain scenes.
The artist does not own a car, but works instead by taking hikes or visiting the location on his bicycle. He sometimes takes photos or makes sketches, but more often he simply envisions a composite image in his mind and then puts his drawing directly on the board.
Mr. Fields creates from the farthest background to the most immediate foreground, applying his paint and pencil in layers, and using extremely thin washes of color to create the illusion of distance. In contrast, his objects in the foreground, whether plants or animals, stand in brilliant relief and possess an extremely lifelike quality. The artist currently lives
and works from his home studio on the slopes of Haleakala, Maui's dormant volcano.
