Commissioned by the Matson Navigation Company to create a series of murals in 1938, Eugene Savage completed the task in 1940. Due to the outbreak of World War II, his bold and superbly drafted paintings lay in Matson's basement until 1948, at which time they were reproduced as menu covers aboard the S.S. Lurline.

In 1951, Savage's genius was honored at a display of American Lithographs at the Smithsonian Institute.

It is estimated that over a quarter of a million Savage menu covers were distributed between 1948 and 1956, and today, his beautiful menu covers are highly prized by discerning collectors of Hawaiian ephemera.

Eugene Savage, a native of Covington, Indiana, died in 1978, at the age of 95. Here, in chronological order, we offer brilliant reproductions of his most popular pieces faithfully executed by Ricardo San Pedro.
