Although tourism is now Hawaii's largest industry, agriculture is still an important part of the state's economic mix, and sugar remains the second largest single crop grown. In addition to the sugar itself, molasses and electricity are also produced. Today, sugar cane is grown on about 70,000 acres on Kauai and Maui, yielding some 340,000 tons of raw sugar, and providing employment for many thousands.
Deep within a cane field, here's a pole house, modest by some current real estate standards, but charming nonetheless.
