"California, Territories of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and Utah"
Published by Johnson and Ward, 1862-63
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2013
This reproduction of the rare fourth state map of "California, Territories of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and Utah" was originally published by Johnson and Ward of New York in 1862-63, as part of Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas, which was issued yearly from 1860 through 1874.
As early as 1860, Arizona initiated a plan to establish a territorial government. At first claiming all land of New Mexico south of 34 degrees, 40 minutes, the territory was later established in 1863 as west of 109 degrees.
This map records the final agreement pertaining to Arizona's boundaries and shows the new territory adjacent to New Mexico, as opposed to beneath it.
