"Louisiana"

Published by Colton, 1868

This superior reproduction of the classic map of "Louisiana" identifiable by its strapwork border, was originally published by G.W. and C.B. Colton & Co. of New York in 1868.

Colton, who published his first atlas in 1855, was an immediate commercial success, and his maps although once easy to obtain have become increasingly scarce and inevitably more expensive. With its combination of block and hand-coloring, this map is shown here 44 years after Louisiana was admitted into the Union and just 5 years before Louisiana joined the Confederacy.

Union troops controlled the Mississippi in 1862 and the state's economy was ruined by the Civil War. Antique maps of this quality are becoming ever more desirable to collectors, both beginning and advanced.
