This beautifully hand-colored copperplate engraving of the World in two hemispheres by Pieter Van der Aa, one of a five map suite, was published in 1727.

Published half a century before the discoveries of Captain Cook, the map reflects the lack of knowledge of the Pacific region, Australia and the western and Great Lakes regions of North America. The interior of Africa is mostly guesswork as is the representation of California, shown here as an island. The map is enhanced by colorful and dramatic engravings.
