"The Environs of Paris"
Published by Colton, 1855
This classic map, "The Environs of Paris", identifiable by its strapwork border was published by G.W. and C.B. Colton & Co. of New York in 1855. This detailed steelplate engraving shows the city of Paris one year before the Peace Treaty of Paris ended the Crimean War.
Colton, who published his first atlas in 1855, was an immediate commercial success, and his maps, although once relatively easy to obtain, have become increasingly scarce and inevitably more expensive.
