"California, Territories of New Mexico and Utah"

Published by Johnson, 1860

At the time of this map's publication, the west was undergoing considerable changes. As a result of the Texas Rent and the Mexican-American War, Mexico was forced to cede their northern lands to the United States. From these lands were formed the state of California and the territories of New Mexico and Utah.

This rare, first state reproduction map was published by Johnson and Browning of New York in 1860 as part of Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas. This fascinating frontier map includes Native Americans tribal locations, the tracks of early explorers and the Emigrant Road. The coloring combines block printing and hand stencil.
