"North America"
Published by John Tallis, 1851
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016
This superb reproduction of the original hand-colored steel plate engraving, "North America", was first published by the noted English cartographer, John Tallis, in his Illustrated Atlas and serves as a fine example of mid-19th century pictorial mapmaking. Generally considered to be the last of the great pictorial mapmakers, Tallis's maps are eagerly sought after by collectors.
Of special note here are the splendid vignettes which show Esquimaux Dog-Sledge, Mount Hekla, Cossacks, Wapiti Deer, North American Indians, Convoy of Diamonds, Falls of Niagara, Beavers, and Ancient Monument, Mexico. Each is an example of the artistic quality rarely available in contemporary cartographical art.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
