"Map of that Part of Washington Territory Lying West of the Rocky Mountains"

Published by U.S. Government, 35th Congress, 1858

This reproduction of a beautifully colored lithograph was originally printed for the United States Senate 35th Congress, which accompanied the report of James Tilton, the Surveyor General in 1858.

The map shows survey work in progress that hoped to find a route for the Northern Pacific Railway. Gold was discovered in eastern Washington in 1855 and this historic facsimile map is one of the few to depict the area in such remarkable detail.
