Various Articles of the Sandwich Islands

Artist: John Webber
Plate: 67
Engraver: J. Record

Printed by: Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

Depicted in this image are shark tooth weapons, a boar tusk bracelet, a rattle, a dagger and an idol.

The weapons, constructed from wood and set with teeth from sharks, were primarily used in hand-to-hand combat.

The gourd rattle, filled with seeds and capped with decorative featherwork, was a popular musical accompaniment to hula.

The dagger (pahoa) was another implement of war.

The idol was constructed from wicker and covered with feathers. The eyes were made from mother-of-pearl and the mouth was set with the teeth of dogs. This remarkable figure represents Kukailimoku, in his role as the god of war.

We custom-print this facsimile on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
