"The Islands of Hawaii"

Published by Steve Strickland, 2000

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

This map was created by Maui artist Steve Strickland using a very sharp pencil, which he then colored with a wash of liquid acrylic inks. The map took over 250 hours to complete, and he was careful to faithfully represent the islands as accurately as possible.

His images of the early natives meeting the explorer, Captain James Cook, were inspired by the original engraving "Kealakekua Bay" drawn by John Webber and published in 1784.

Of special note:

    • The coat of arms above the title is the seal of the state of Hawaii.
    • The small insert on the left shows the location of the islands in relation to the rest of the Western Hemisphere.
    • The constellation in the same insert is Orion, a dominant figure in the Hawaiian night.
    • The wind at the top of the map depicts the trade winds, which have always been vitally important to these islands, not only for comfort but also for travel and commerce in the past.

Lahaina Printsellers custom-prints this image on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using only the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years.
