Steady ocean travel to Hawaii was not established until 1882, when the Matson Shipping Company began serving the islands with its cargo ships. By the 1920's, Matson had a fleet of luxurious ocean liners, and as Hawaii began promoting itself to the outside world as a tourist destination, they brought in moneyed visitors by the boatload. Since no expense was spared for this elite clientele, the company even commissioned original art for its daily menu covers.

The "menu art" of Frank MacIntosh is synonymous with Hawaii's golden years. Under contract to Matson in the 1930's, his crisp, bright airbrush images captured the imagination of the thousands of vacationers who traveled to Hawaii on the S.S. Matsonia in the late 40's.

MacIntosh's stylized art-deco designs have been often imitated, and during the late 40's and early 50's, his designs even appeared on aloha wear. Frank Macintosh's iconic designs enchanted our parents and grandparents, and the magic still works!
