Steady ocean travel to Hawaii was not established until 1882, when the Matson Shipping Company began serving the islands with its cargo ships. By the 1920's, Matson had a fleet of luxurious ocean liners, and as Hawaii began promoting itself to the outside world as a tourist destination, they brought in moneyed visitors by the boatload. Since no expense was spared for this elite clientele, the company even commissioned original art for its daily menu covers. Under commission to Matson in the 1930's and 40's to produce menu covers, graphic artist Frank MacIntosh produced brilliantly colored, romantic scenes of Hawaii, capturing the spirit and adventure of the islands during this time period. Widely collected as keepsakes, his "menu art" became a popular style of expression then and continues to delight us today. Here we showcase our superb reproductions of some of his popular collectibles. Lahaina Printsellers custom-prints this image on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using only the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years.
