"Ohi Ai" Based upon the original by Isabella Sinclair, 1885 Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016 This superb reproduction of the original 19th century chromolithograph of "Ohi Ai" was first printed by Leighton Brothers and published by Low, Marston, & Rivington in 1885 for Isabella Sinclair's Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands. Being the first book to deal solely with the flora of Hawaii, it received much attention at the time of its publication. In it, Sinclair warned of coming disaster. "The Hawaiian flora seems to grow in an easy, careless way," she wrote, "which, though pleasingly artistic, and well-adapted to what may be termed the natural state of the islands, will not long survive the invasions of foreign plants and changed conditions." "Forest fires, animals, and agriculture have so changed the islands, within the last fifty or sixty years, that one can now travel for miles...without finding a single indigenous plant." The invaders, continued Sinclair, were "spreading as if by magic, and rapidly exterminating much of the native flora." We custom-print this facsimile on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
