Artist: William Bligh

This superior reproduction of the original charts and profiles from Cook's Third Voyage of Discovery (1776-1780) is distinguished by both its high degree of accuracy and its historic importance.
Captain James Cook mapped the entire Pacific Ocean and was the first explorer to chart the islands of Hawaii, New Zealand, Tonga, the Cook Islands, and the east coast of Australia.
This profile of the "Sandwich Islands" is from the first textual edition of Cook's Third Voyage and was drawn by William Bligh. Of special interest is the fact that, upon the return of the Resolution and the Discovery to England, William Bligh was charged with negligence, and was thereby judged to have contributed to the death of Captain Cook.
Bligh was ultimately exonerated, but in the interim, many of the maps and charts which he created were unattributed. This profile map is one of the few to acknowledge Bligh's authorship.
