Product description:

Started in 1862, the Pioneer Mill Company planted and milled sugarcane in the Lahaina area of Maui. At its peak over 45,000 tons of sugar were produced from over 5000 harvested acres of cane annually, and approximately 1,600 laborers were employed there in the company's prime.

Claiming losses in the millions and unable to compete with low sugar prices from foreign markets, the mill processed its last harvest in the fall of 1999, and the sugar industry in West Maui came to a sad end.

Here, the lens of photographer Dave Shively captures the Pioneer Mill smokestack which faithfully continues to keep watch over Lahaina town.

Lahaina Printsellers custom-prints this image on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using only the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years.
