Located high on the windward slopes of Maui's Haleakala, Waikamoi Preserve is an important sanctuary for hundreds of native Hawaiian species. Encompassing more than 5000 acres, its koa and ohia forests shelter one of the most diverse forest ecosystems in all of Hawaii.
Taking its name from a stream that runs through it, the preserve is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to 13 types of native Hawaiian bird species, some of which are endangered.
In this view, artist Richard Fields puts the spotlight on a rare pair of bright yellow nukupuu birds as they sit in their ohia lehua trees, surveying their rainforest kingdom.
