"Hawaiian Group or Sandwich Islands"
Published by J.H. Colton & Co., 1855
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016
This superior reproduction of the classic map "Hawaiian Group or Sandwich Islands" was originally published by J. H. Colton & Co.in New York. Colton, who published his first atlas in 1855, was an immediate commercial success, and his maps, although once easy to obtain, have become increasingly scarce and inevitably more expensive.
This map was published during the era of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The engraved lines, which represent the near-shore ocean depths, were a stylistic feature of mid-nineteenth century cartography.
Insets of Samoa, Tonga, Feejee (sic) Islands, Galapagos, Marquesas, Society Islands and New Zealand complete this fine mapping of the Hawaiian Islands. The entire piece is then accented by a highly-detailed decorative border.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
