"Chart of the Sandwich Islands"

Published by Strahan and Cadell, 1779

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

Captain James Cook, assisted by young William Bligh (later of H.M.S. Bounty fame), performed this first charting of the Sandwich Islands. Strahan and Cadell of London, England, published it in the first textual edition of Cook's Third Voyage in 1779.

This charting is highly prized among collectors for its aesthetic appeal and rarity. It also served as the foundation for all the maps that were charted after it.

The map's inset depicts Kealakekua Bay where the great Captain Cook met his untimely death on February 14, 1779.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
