This superior reproduction of "The British Islands in the West Indies" was originally published by the SDUK in 1835.
The center map here is of Jamaica, while surrounding insets feature the Virgin Islands, Grenadines, Grenada, Trinidad, New Providence, Grand Cayman, Anguila, Roatan, Dominica, Tobago, Barbadoes, St. Vincent, St. Lucie, and the Leeward islands.
This chart is a fine example of the fascinating and highly-accurate series of maps issued in London between 1830 and 1850 by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, commonly known as the SDUK.
The Society was formed in March 1828, by the publisher Charles Knight and Henry Brougham, a radical politician and reformer. During its lifetime, the SDUK was extremely active and published numerous informative works.
Their publications were inexpensive texts, as their goal was to bring scientific and similarly high-minded material to the working and middle classes.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
