"Turcici Imperii Descriptio"

Published by Abraham Ortelius, 1598

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

This excellent reproduction of the detailed engraving of "Turcici Imperii Descriptio" was originally published in Antwerp by Abraham Ortelius for the Latin edition of his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, considered to be the first modern atlas of the world.

Engraved mainly by Franz Hogenberg and printed by Christoffel Plantijn, the map is based upon Gastaldi's earlier wall map of Asia. It covers the Middle East, Turkey and the eastern Mediterreanean from Sicily to Cyprus.

Rendered in full color, the map includes an elaborate title cartouche and the obligatory sea monster and firing ships, characteristics of most maps by Ortelius.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
