"Terra Sancta quae in Sacris Terra Promissionis ol: Palestina"

Published by Joducus Hondius, 1606

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

This reproduction of the hand-colored engraving of "Terra Sancta quae in Sacris Terra Promissionis ol: Palestina" was originally published in Amsterdam in 1606 by Joducus Hondius, based on the copperplates of Gerard Mercator in his Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes.

This classic map of the Holy Land shows Palestine on both sides of the River Jordan and the shoreline from Beirut to Gaza, as well as numerous other place names.

Very similar in appearance to Abraham Ortelius's earlier "Terra Sancta", an illustration of Jonah and the whale appears on the left, while on the right, in the Dead Sea, tiny images of the Biblical towns of Sodom and Gomorrah are shown on fire. An elaborate title cartouche completes the chart.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
