"Die erst General Tafel / Die Beschreibung und den Circkel des gantzen Erdtrichs und Deeres innhaltend"
Published by Munster, 1588
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016
Originally published in Sebastian Munster's revised 1588 Cosmographia in Basle, this is a lovely full-color oval map, depicting the world as it was known at the time. It is based on Abraham Ortelius's earlier map.
The map includes a marvelous depiction of the Northwest and Northeast passages. The massive unknown southern continent is retained, as are early references drawn from Marco Polo's travels.
This reproduction map is decorated with the obligatory sea monsters sailing ships characteristic of Munster woodcuts. The corners are decorated with an elaborate floral and vine pattern, while the cartouches contain text in Gothic German.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
