"Mappemonde a L'Usage du Roy"
Published by Guillaume Delisle, 1720
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016
Shown here is a superb reproduction of the original hand-colored large double hemisphere map of the world published by Guillaume Delisle in Paris in 1720.
The title cartouche is based on the French royal coat of arms and allegorical female representations of the four continents, while another one contains DeLisle's imprint and adddress.
The map is a marvelous depiction of the routes of a number of important early explorers, including Magellan, Mendana, Le Maire and Halley. Australia and New Zealand are only partially mapped, while the Pacific Northwest coast of North America is blank above Cap Blanc.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
