Canvas for Gallery Wrap
When you purchase Canvas prepared to be gallery wrapped, we add a 2½” mirrored border (on all sides) which allows you to have a stretcher bar frame made up to 2” deep. The mirrored borders may throw you off, but that border is designed to be seen on the side of the stretcher bar frame. This ensures that the complete image is shown on the face of the frame. Gallery wraps are ideal for large prints.
"Le Isole di Sandwich"
Published by Giovanni Cassini, 1798
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016
The Italian painter and engraver, Giovanni Cassini, produced this splendid early view of the Hawaiian Islands as part of his epic three-volume atlas.
This is the only map we have seen embellished with a decorative cartouche, imaginatively illustrating the death of Captain Cook on the island of Hawaii in 1779. Captain Cook's daring voyages and untimely death made this one of the most famous scenes of the late 18th century.
Cassini, who had never been to Hawaii, used Cook's "Chart of the Sandwich Islands" as a model for his map, and he made some interesting errors. His representation of the Hawaiian natives with their feather headdresses is actually more reminiscent of the American Indians. His final faux pas is to show Cook, an English naval officer, in an Italian naval officer's uniform.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
