"Africae Propriae Tabula"
Published by Abraham Ortelius, 1570
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016
This reproduction of the 16th century map, "Africae Propriae Tabula", was originally issued in 1590 in Ortelius's Parergon, a series of maps reconstructed in part from historical sources. This map was made by Ortelius based on information from Gastaldi's Africa map and also on ancient sources such as Pliny and Virgil.
Of interest is the inset map of Carthage, with accompanying text describing the Carthaginian Wars with Rome.
The map is richly embellished with a fine title cartouche and a large text block enclosed in a strapwork cartouche.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
