"A New and Accurate Map of Africa"

Published by Thomas Bowen, 1786

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

This superior reproduction of the copperplate engraving "A New and Accurate Map of Africa" was originally published by Thomas Bowen for Thomas Bankes's New System of Geography, Published by Royal Authority in 1786.

Bowen, engraver of maps for George II of England and Louis XV of France, produced this surprisingly accurate map of Africa, with its original and tasteful hand-coloring, just eighteen years after Captain Cook commenced his first voyage of exploration in 1768.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
