"L'Afrique"

Published by Pieter van der Aa, 1729

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2013

This reproduction of the beautifully hand-colored copperplate engraving of "L'Afrique" was originally published by Pieter van der Aa in Leiden in 1729, as one of a five map suite.

Although this map reflects some changes from Ptolemy's previous mapping of Africa's interior, many of his erroneous postulations, such as Lakes Zaire and Zafflan, are retained, albeit moved about slightly.

The colorful map is crisply engraved and includes both a compass rose and a detailed title cartouche, which features elephants, an ostrich and a man wrestling a crocodile.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
