This superior reproduction of the copperplate engraving of "Africa" was originally published in 1853 by Orr & Company in London. John Dower was the talented engraver.
Although this map was published during an era of intense European exploration of Africa, major areas of the continent remained uncharted, and those "unexplored" regions add a charm and mystique to African maps of the period.
Burton and Speke would finally reach and begin the charting of the Great Lakes region in east Africa beginning in 1856, in their quest for the source of the Nile.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
