"Americae Sive Novi Orbis Nova Descriptio"

Published by Abraham Ortelius, 1587

This historically significant, 16th century reproduction map by Abraham Ortelius depicted the New World with the most recent information provided by explorers of his time. As usual, Ortelius embellished his map with sailing ships and sea monsters, and he also incorporated an elaborate title cartouche.

It is significant to note that the Great Lakes in North America have yet to be discovered, and that Ortelius also portrayed the Great Southern Continent according to Ptolemy.
