"America India Nova"

Published by Mercator, 1595

Michael Mercator produced this outstanding reproduction of the hand-colored map of the Americas for his influential atlas first published in 1595.

It is interesting to note that Mercator correctly identified New Guinea as an island unto itself, but included the hypothetical Ptolemaic Terre Australis. He also nicely rendered three vignettes detailing the Gulf of Mexico, Haiti and Cuba.
