"America Septentrionalis"

Published by Jansson, 1636

This reproduction of a beautiful hand-colored map of North America by Jan Jansson is the first Dutch atlas of North America. It depicts California as an island and details the vast network of rivers foreshadowing the Mississippi system.

The continental landmasses are embellished with wild animals and the ocean is decorated with sailing ships and sea monsters. Jansson also enhanced his creation with an impressive title cartouche.
