"Planisphaerium Ptolemaicum Sive Machina Orbium Mundi..."

Published by Andreas Cellarius, 1660

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

This reproduction of "Planisphaerium Ptolemaicum Sive Machina Orbium Mundi...", one of the finest hand-colored 17th century celestial charts, was originally published by Andreas Cellarius, a mathematician and cosmographer, in 1660. His Harmonia Macrocosmica is commonly regarded as one of the most spectacular cosmographical works to be published in the second half of the 17th century, and his chart represented the Ptolemaic view of the universe.

In his great astronomical work, Almagest, Claudius Ptolemy, in the 2nd century A.D., presented a complete system of mathematical constructions that accounted successfully for the observed motion of each heavenly body.

Ptolemy's scheme was essentially constructed to support Aristotle's idea of a universe made up from a series of spheres, one inside the other, with the earth at the center.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
