"Motus Planetarum Superiorum"

Published by Johann Baptist Homann, 1740

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

This superb reproduction of "Motus Planetarum Superiorum" was first published by cartographer Johann Homann in 1740, based on the work of prominent astronomer Johann Doppelmayr. Homann and Doppelmayr were frequent collaborators, producing celestial and astronomical charts for atlases of the time. This work is thought to be from Atlas Novus Coelestis, published in Nuremberg.

This chart of the solar system, with spirals representing the motions of Jupiter, Mars and Saturn and the path of the Sun in the sky, illustrates the theory of "retrograde motion".

Of particular interest is the elaborate center cartouche, depicting cherubic angels in various states of action. Each allegorical cherub represents one of the planets moving through the heavens.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
